What is UGC-NET?

The University Grants Commission – National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) is conducted by NTA on behalf of the UGC to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for three distinct purposes:

• Award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and appointment as Assistant Professor
• Appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D.
• Admission to Ph.D. only

It’s important to understand that these three categories are not interchangeable. A candidate who qualifies under the “Assistant Professor and Ph.D.” category will not be eligible for JRF, and a candidate who qualifies under “admission to Ph.D. only” will be eligible for neither JRF nor Assistant Professor appointment. Choose your category carefully while filling the application form.

Eligibility Matrix at a Glance

A few additional points worth noting for Ph.D. aspirants:

• UGC-NET (Category-2 and Category-3) can be used directly as a Ph.D. entrance test, replacing separate university-level entrance exams.
• For Ph.D. admission, your NET score carries 70% weightage, while the remaining 30% is based on your performance in the interview/viva conducted by the university/HEI.
• NET marks for Category-2 and Category-3 candidates remain valid for one year from the date of declaration of the NET result.

Exam Pattern: 

The exam will be conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode only, in a single session with no break between papers.

All questions across both parts are compulsory and objective type (MCQ).

Medium of question paper: English and Hindi only (except language papers). Once you select your medium while filling the application, it cannot be changed later — so choose carefully.

Marking Scheme

The marking scheme is refreshingly simple and candidate-friendly:

• Each question carries 2 marks.
• No negative marking for incorrect responses.
• No marks for unanswered, unattempted, or “marked for review” questions.
• If a question turns out to have multiple correct options, or is found wrong or gets dropped, marks are still awarded to candidates who attempted it — a safeguard against technical or human errors in question-setting.

Since there’s no negative marking, the smart strategy is to attempt every question rather than leaving any blank.

Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?

Qualifying Marks Required

• General / Unreserved / General-EWS candidates need at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in a Master’s degree or equivalent.
• OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) / SC / ST / PwD / PwBD / Third Gender candidates need at least 50% marks.
• Candidates still pursuing their Master’s degree, or awaiting final-year results, can also apply — but will be admitted provisionally. They must clear their Master’s with the required percentage within two years of the NET result (or one year, if qualifying for “Admission to Ph.D. only”), failing which they’ll be disqualified.

Special Provisions

• Ph.D. degree holders whose Master’s exam was completed by 19 September 1991 get a 5% relaxation in aggregate marks (55% → 50%).
• Four-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree holders need a minimum of 75% aggregate marks (or equivalent grade), with a 5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/Differently-Abled and other notified categories. Candidates qualifying NET on the basis of a four-year UG degree are eligible for JRF and Ph.D. admission, but not for Assistant Professor appointment.
• Candidates in the last year/semester of a four-year UG programme may also apply provisionally.
• Candidates should ideally appear in the subject of their own postgraduation; if their PG subject isn’t listed among NET subjects, they may choose a related subject.
• Candidates with foreign qualifications are advised to get equivalence certified by UGC before applying.

A Word of Caution

NTA does not verify eligibility documents at the time of registration — candidature is purely provisional. If ineligibility is detected at any stage, the candidature will be cancelled, and the candidate may face legal action. So double-check your own eligibility before applying.

Age Limit

• JRF: Maximum 30 years as on 1st day of the month in which the exam concludes, i.e., 01.06.2026.
  • Up to 5 years’ relaxation for OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/PwBD/Third Gender candidates and women applicants.
  • Up to 5 years’ relaxation for candidates with research experience (subject to certification, capped at 5 years).
  • 3 years’ relaxation for candidates holding an LL.M. degree.
  • Up to 5 years’ relaxation for candidates who have served in the armed forces.
  • Total age relaxation on any combination of the above grounds cannot exceed 5 years.
• Assistant Professor: No upper age limit.
• Admission to Ph.D.: No upper age limit.

Reservation Policy

As per the Government of India’s reservation policy applicable to Central Universities and deemed universities, seats under UGC-NET are reserved as follows:

• 15% for Scheduled Caste (SC)
• 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe (ST)
• 27% for Other Backward Classes – Non-Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL), as per the Central List
• 10% for General-Economically Weaker Sections (General-EWS)
• 5% (within the above categories) for Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD) with 40% or more disability

Reservation benefits apply only to candidates from communities included in the Central List published by the Government of India — state OBC lists that aren’t part of the Central List are not eligible to select the OBC-NCL category.

Provisions for Persons with Disabilities (PwD/PwBD)

In line with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and subsequent Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment guidelines, NTA provides the following support:

• Scribe/Reader/Lab Assistant facility for candidates with benchmark disabilities (40% or more), especially blindness, locomotor disability (both arms affected), and cerebral palsy — available on request, no certificate needed for these specific categories.
• For other benchmark disabilities, a certificate from a Government Chief Medical Officer/Civil Surgeon is required to avail scribe facility.
• Candidates with less than 40% disability but genuine difficulty in writing can also get scribe/compensatory time support, subject to certification by a multi-member medical authority.
• Compensatory time: minimum of 20 minutes per hour of examination for those using scribe support — meaning eligible PwBD candidates get at least one additional hour for the 3-hour exam, whether or not they actually use a scribe.
• Candidates may bring their own scribe (qualification one level below their own) or request NTA to arrange one.

Important: Misuse of scribe or compensatory time facility without the requisite disability status leads to exclusion from evaluation. Category/sub-category changes are not permitted after the application form is submitted, so fill this section carefully.
